Launching a Lingerie Brand? Here’s what the process really looks like

When new founders reach out to me, they often say,“I have this idea, I just need help making it real.”
What they don’t always realise is that turning a lingerie idea into a launch-ready product is not a quick two-month sprint. It’s a detailed, multi-phase process that takes time, focus and a solid understanding of what’s ahead.
If you’re in the early stages of building a lingerie brand, this guide will help you set realistic expectations and avoid costly mistakes.
💡 The Real Timeline
Let’s be honest, two months is not enough. A strong, well-developed lingerie product takes at least 6 months, and often up to 12–18 months if you want to launch something you’re genuinely proud of.
Rushing through development usually leads to:
Poor fit
Quality issues
Expensive reworks
A loss of credibility with your first customers
Taking your time isn’t a delay, it’s smart strategy.
🛠️ From Idea to Launch: Step-by-Step
Here’s how I typically support lingerie founders through the launch journey:
1. Discovery Call
We start with a deep-dive call to understand your idea, your goals and where you’re currently stuck.
2. Concept Stage
If you’re still early in your journey, I help you:
Clarify your customer
Understand your market
Spot the right opportunitiesThis research guides every design decision.
3. Design Development
I create:
Initial sketches
Digital CADs of your designs
Refinements based on your feedback
This phase sets the creative foundation.
4. Tech Packs
Once your designs are approved, I build tech packs that explain:
Construction details
Material specs
Colourways and sizesThis is the language your factory speaks, skipping it is risky.
5. Sampling & Sourcing
This is where most founders underestimate the time and complexity involved.
Sample 1 (prototype) → Fit test
Sample 2 (correction) → Adjustments
Sample 3 (approval) → Close to final.
Each round takes 3-4 weeks. Some factories also help source fabrics and trims, but that means less control over final outcomes.
Alongside sampling, we also:
Approve lap dips and strike-offs
Finalise trims and finishes
6. Pre-Production Sample (PP Sample)
This is your final sign-off sample, identical to what will go into bulk production. It represents your launch-ready product.
7. Bulk Production & TOP Sample
Your factory goes into production. You receive a TOP sample (Top Of Production) to check consistency.
⚠️ Note: The production and sourcing side often involves specialists beyond my scope as a designer. But I can guide you right up to the pre-production stage, with clarity and confidence.
🔍 Common Mistakes Founders Make
1. Underestimating time: They plan for a 2-month timeline, it takes 6-12 months.
2. Lack of technical knowledge: Factories can take shortcuts when you don’t speak their language. That’s why you need a designer who knows how to guide the process.
3. Vision vs. reality: A client once thought “seamless” lingerie meant no seams at all. In truth, seamless garments still require construction planning, and I help founders bridge this gap between aesthetic vision and technical execution.
🧵 My Role in Your Journey
I’m with you throughout concept, design and sampling.I:
Guide fabric and trim selections
Communicate with factories on your behalf
Help refine fit
Ensure your final sample is production-ready
While I’m not a production manager, my technical support during the development phase is often the difference between an idea and a commercially strong product.
