How Much Does It Cost to Start a Lingerie Brand, Two Realistic Paths (Itemised, honest, and practical)

I’m spilling the beans. A few months into full-time freelancing for lingerie startups, the question I’m asked most is, “How much does it cost to start a lingerie brand?” I’ve heard wild numbers, and I’ve also helped founders stretch a small budget into a professional first collection. Both are possible, but founders need a clear baseline so they can plan, not panic.
Most of the people who approach me are women who couldn’t find lingerie that fit their needs, so they want to create it themselves. They’re passionate, driven, and realistic. They do not need to have full funding on day one. Product development is a process. You can start thoughtfully, then scale as you learn.
Below I’m sharing two practical approaches I use with clients. I worked this out from my research and conversations with 50+ factories, plus 15+ years of design experience in lingerie, swimwear and nightwear. I show both the itemised costs and sensible ranges, and I convert them approximately to euros and pounds so international founders can visualise it.
A quick note on currency, these conversions use current mid-market rates, so they are approximate: 1 USD ≈ 0.86 EUR, 1 USD ≈ 0.76 GBP. X-Rates+1
Version 1 - Client-managed development (more control, higher involvement)
How it works You commission the design and tech pack from a specialist, then manage pattern making, sampling, fabrics and trims, and the factory relationship yourself. You keep maximum control, and you choose specialists for pattern-making and high-quality finishing.
Itemised costs (USD)
Design + Tech pack for 1 bra & brief set, Horizon Design Studio by Ash: $800 - $1,500
Specialist lingerie pattern maker: $400 - $1,200
Sample sewing, 1-2 rounds: $50 - $1,000 (usually $50-$500 per style)
Fabrics & trims for samples: $60 - $200
Fit model / fittings (optional, recommended): $50 - $150
Shipping / courier for samples: $30 - $150 (per courier)
Totals (USD)
Minimum realistic total: $1,390
Typical practical range I quote clients: $1,390 - $3,700 (this is what we see most often, explained below)
Maximum realistic total (top-end): $4,200 (if you use top-tier pattern makers and multiple sample rounds)
Approx conversions (estimates)
Why this can add up High-end pattern makers and additional sample rounds are the main drivers of the top-end. If you want luxury fit, full size grading and very tight tolerances, expect the higher range. This route gives you full control and fit precision, but it requires more time and coordination.
Version 2 - Factory-managed development (default I recommend for first-time founders)
How it works: You buy a design + tech pack, then the factory manages pattern making, sampling and often sources sample fabrics and trims for you. It’s faster and more affordable, and it reduces the number of suppliers you need to manage. For founders with zero industry experience, this is the simplest path to start professionally.
Itemised costs (USD)
Design + Tech pack: $800 - $1,500
Factory pattern making: $150 - $400
Sample sewing, 1-2 rounds: $50 - $500
Sample fabrics & trims, usually included in factory sampling costs: $0 (assumed included)
Shipping of samples: $30 - $100 (per courier)
Totals (USD)
Minimum realistic total: $1,030
Typical practical range I quote clients: $1,030 - $2,500
Maximum realistic total (top-end): $2,500 (if the factory charges for extra sample rounds, or uses pricier internal materials)
Approx conversions (estimates)
Why I usually recommend this Factory-managed is the least overwhelming route for first-time founders. It is quicker, and you only need to coordinate with one partner. The trade-off is you may get less precision in fit compared with dedicated lingerie pattern makers. Factories prioritise production, not design refinement, so expect to do attentive reviews during sampling.
A few practical notes founders always ask about
MOQs and bulk production Minimum order quantities vary a lot by factory and product. I can help you estimate MOQs once we define your product and materials, but there is no single global figure, and it changes case by case.
Deposits and payment timing Expect deposits. I request a 50 percent deposit for my services, which is common, but some suppliers or factories ask for higher advance payments. Always confirm payment terms before you start.
How to lower your initial spend
Start with Version 2 for faster, lower-cost development.
Limit sample rounds to essential tests, but do not skip them.
Use regional suppliers when feasible to cut shipping costs.
Be clear in your tech pack to avoid factory guesswork.
Practical comparison at a glance
Control vs simplicity: Version 1 gives higher control and better fit potential, Version 2 gives simplicity and speed.
Budget: Version 1 typically costs more, Version 2 is the lower-cost start.
Who it’s for: Version 1 is for founders who want control and can manage suppliers, Version 2 is for founders who want a simpler path to market.
Final thoughts, and why I wrote this
Most founders I work with are women who could not find lingerie that matched their needs in comfort, fit, or sustainability. They come with passion and a problem to solve. After a few months freelancing full time, I realised the challenges are remarkably similar, so I wanted to make the first steps less overwhelming and a lot more encouraging.
If the numbers above look daunting, remember two things: you do not need all the funding on day one, and Version 2 exists precisely to make starting easier. Think of product development as staged investment: validate first, scale once you know what sells.
