One of the first things I do with new clients is walk them through the basic lingerie styles. Not because they don’t know what they like, but because once you understand the foundation, it’s so much easier to build your dream product on top of it.

Bras and briefs can get very technical, but I always say, let’s keep it simple to begin with.

These are the styles I refer to again and again. They make up the foundation of 80% of the lingerie designs I’ve created for clients across the world.

👙 Bra Styles to Know

Balconette: Wide-set straps and a straight neckline. It gives great lift from below and works especially well for open necklines and fuller busts.

Demi: Covers about half to three-quarters of the bust. Offers a natural, rounded shape and makes a great everyday bra.

Plunge: Designed for deep V-necks. Lower at the centre front, it enhances cleavage while still offering support.

🩲 Brief Styles to Know

Bikini: The classic. Mid-rise with moderate coverage. It flatters most body types and is easy to wear daily.

Brazilian: Business in the front, cheeky in the back. A hybrid between a bikini and a thong, feminine and flattering.

Thong: Minimal at the back, perfect for no VPL (visible panty line) days and body-hugging outfits.

Boyshort: Offers more coverage and comfort. Great for lounging or when you want that extra secure feel without compromising on style.

Why These Basics Matter

Once you get these core fits right, you’ll be able to communicate your design ideas much more clearly.Whether you’re sketching your first collection or sharing a moodboard with a designer, this shared language makes everything easier.

The CADs I’ve included in this post come straight from my own personal design library. Every lingerie piece I create starts from these silhouettes, then evolves through lace, trims, embroidery, or styling details.
